Olympic Torch Bearer, 2010

by JEFF NAGEL

Sardar Jarnail Singh Sahota believes he will be the first turbaned Canadian to carry the Olympic torch in Canada when he hoists the flame on February 6, 2010 in Ashcroft, British Columbia, Canada, as it makes its way to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The 54-year-old Surrey businessman says it's the perfect way to cap a quarter century in Canada since immigrating here.

"It's really exciting for me," he said. "I'm really proud to be a Sikh-Canadian."

Jarnail Singh was once a national level lightweight boxer back on the subcontinent, and has coached boxing here in Canada.

His wife and three children will be on hand to watch his leg of the Olympic torch relay.

"I think I will wear a red turban," he said. "It's Canada's colour!"
