U.S. Marine Corporal Gurpreet Singh Killed in Afghanistan

A U.S.Marine, Sikh-American Gurpreet Singh of Antelope, Sacramento County, Califormia, has been killed serving in the war in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Department of Defense says Cpl. Gurpreet Singh, 21, died in combat Wednesday, June 22, 2011, in the Helmand province.

Gurpreet Singh served with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton.

Gurpreet's death came the same day as President Obama's announcement that, beginning next month, the U.S. would begin a drawdown of troops in Afghanistan toward a goal of 33,000 service men and women pulled out by the end of 2012.
