Tandoori Chicken

Every Friday night after work, Bubba Singh would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a tandoori chicken and some meat kebabs.

But, all of Bubba's neighbours were strict Catholics ... and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating chicken and meat on a Friday. The delicious aroma from the grilled meats was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The priest came over to visit Bubba, and told him of the difficulty his parishoners were experiencing. Before long, the priest had a solution.

He suggested to Bubba that he become a Catholic.

"Assi tey Sikh haan, saanu kee farak painda hai ... (We are Sikh, what difference does it make?)", Bubba declared and marched off with the priest to the latter's church.

When Mass was over, the priest sprinkled holy water over Bubba and intoned: ''You were born a Sikh, and raised a Sikh, but now, you are a Catholic."

Bubba's neighbours were greatly relieved.

Before long, it was Friday night again.

The wonderful aroma of Punjabi tandoori chicken and meat kebabs once again filled the neighbourhood.

The priest was immediately summoned by the neighbours. As he rushed into Bubba's backyard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.

There stood Bubba Singh, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meats and chanted:

"Oye, you waz born a chicken, and you waz born a lamb, you waz raised a chicken, and you waz raised a lamb. But now, yara! you iz a potato and you iz a tomato. Satnam Waheguru!"

I first heard a Jewish version of this story some 20 years ago ("You were born & raised a steer; today, you are a mackeral!"). How wonderful to see it wearing panj kakkaar!
