A Duck Called Singh

by NATALIE FAHY

The four dashing ducklings made a brief appearance at the London Wetland Centre as they ran for cover in the water.

The 43 hectare property  -  run by the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust, and located on the banks of the River Thames in Barnes, Southwest London  -  is widely known as the "best urban site in Europe to watch wildlife".

The four Indian Runner ducklings have been the subject of much attention at the centre  -  attracting visitors eager to see the ducklings cracking out of their shells.

And, in light of their species name, the speedy youngsters have been named after four world-famous athletes:  Linford, after Linford Christie; Bannister, after Roger Bannister; Kelly, after Kelly Holmes; and Singh, after Marathon runner Fauja Singh.

Netty Ribeaux, from the centre's education team, said: "Singh is by far the fastest and boldest runner, while Kelly is a little timid and tends to stick behind the others. They are wonderful ducklings and it is great to see them developing each day."

The ducklings can be seen every day, and at weekends, the centre runs activities for visitors, aimed at families. As part of these weekend activities, the centre will be running "meet the ducklings" sessions from 1pm to 1.30pm, which involve taking a walk with the ducklings and watching them swim.
