"Return of a King" (The Battle for Afghanistan), by W. Dalrymple gives some insight into the Punjab of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British in cis-Sutlej Punjab, and narrates the exploits of the Afghan rulers mentioned in this article.

William Dalrymple is one of my favorite authors and 'Return of a King' is indeed a highly entertaining read. Olaf Caroe's 'The Pathans' is also an excellent resource; considerably less entertaining than Dalrymple's book :-) but a detailed treatment of Afghan history including a chapter called the Durranis and the Sikhs, which talks about Sikh/Afghan encounters in some detail.
