New found respect for Gurkhas and their independent way of life. How sad, we fought together for 200 years but know so little of each other. Even sadder, hints of racism towards all of mongoloid features.

Excellent write up; thanks for sharing. Please allow me to point out though that the decision to cross the swollen Attock was not Maharaja Ranjit Singh's (who in fact was undecided about crossing). It was Akali Phoola Singh who went ahead with the plunge into the swollen river as he had already done an ardaas for the success of the campaign and would not turn back. Maharaja Ranjit Singh followed later after Baba Phoola Singh had already crossed over. Such is the commitment to ardaas by the Guru's Sikhs.

Gurkhas, just like the rest of proud and diverse people of the sub-continent, split up fighting on both sides. One, guided by the teachings of the Great Gurus, trying to unite all into an indigenous, secular, spirited homeland and expelling the invaders and foreign rulers. The other, dividing all, pitting one against the other, shedding blood to expand its territory to enslave and exploit the immense wealth and convert the masses of the land into Christianity.

A well researched historical chapter, not commonly known in such detail.

Thank you for writing about this very little known history about both Gurkhas and Sikhs in detail.
