INNI KAUR

Today’s Hukam, Darbar Sahib, Amritsar – Thursday, April 23, 2015

I am satisfied and satiated, eating the food of Truth. With my mind, body and tongue, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Divine. || 1 ||

Life, spiritual life, is in the Divine. Spiritual life consists of singing the Divine Name in the saadh sangat. || 1 || Pause ||

One is adorned by robes galore, if one sings the kirtan of the Divine’s glory, day and night. || 2 ||

One rides upon elephants, chariots and horses, if one sees the Divine’s path within one’s own heart. || 3 ||

Meditating on the feet of the Divine, deep within one’s mind and body, slave Nanak has found the Divine, the treasure of peace. || 4 || 2 || 56 ||

[Guru Arjan, Raag Dhanasari, GGS:684]

Today’s Hukam is very special. It reveals to me the true essence of life.

Guru is beyond kind.

Is it possible for love to amplify with every breath?

For that is what I am feeling. As far back as I can remember, there has been a deep need within me to find out what life is all about. I have simply refused to accept that the purpose of life is only eating, sleeping, working, procreating, etc. It has to be more.

“My hungers and desires were satiated when I ate the food of Truth. Mind meditated on the One, body served the One, tongue chanted praises of the One Creator, Nurturer and Sustainer.”

(This is the food of Truth. The words from Anand Sahib resound within me: O my tongue, eyes, ears and hands: for what purposes were you created and what are you doing?)

What is life?

“True living is to live in the consciousness of the Eternal One and meditate in the congregation of Guru-oriented beings. (Reflect). Day and night sing the praises of the Eternal One.”

(Let every breath be a conscious breath; let every action be a conscious action; let every word be a thoughtful word. This is the message that I am hearing. It has a profound effect on me.)

“The ones who sing the praises of the Divine wear the true clothes of grace. Within their hearts and minds they have recognized the path and they ride on horses, chariots and elephants.”

(Listening to the Guru’s word is riding the horse; accepting Guru’s way is riding the chariot; incorporating Guru’s wisdom is riding the elephant. The Guru-oriented beings that live this life-style care not for praise or slander. These are the chariots, the elephants, the horses that they are riding upon.)

“By meditating on shabad deep within one’s consciousness, one finds endless eternal peace.”

Translation given above is literal. Its spiritual message is to meet the needs of the soul the way we meet those of the body. The following may be seen: The body (bhaee) is (tripat) satiated by (khaaiaa) eating (sach-u = true) the right (bhojan-u) food. The need of the soul is satisfied by (dhiaaiaa) paying attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands and to practice them (man-i = in mind) in thoughts, (tan-i = body) in deeds and (rasna = tongue) in speech. [1.] Productive (jeevna) life (jeevna) is living by (har-i = Almighty) emulating Divine virtues to become like the Master, and obeying Divine commands, i.e. keeping in mind instructions given by the Creator to the soul. To learn and understand these on how to lead (jeevan-u) life, one should go to (saadhsang-i) the holy congregation where virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (jap-i) are recounted, and their practice learnt. [1. Pause - Dwell on this and contemplate.] One (oddhaa-e) wears (bastr) clothes of (anik) many (prakaari) types to protect the body and look good. The soul needs to (andin = everyday) ever (gaa-e) sing (keertan) praises of (gunn) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty and emulate them - in order to protect the soul from vices for it to - be at peace in life, and - be honorably accepted for union with the Almighty. [2.] The physical body (asvaari) rides (hasti) elephants, (rutth) carriages and (as-u) horses to reach the destination and for display possession of such means. The soul should (nihaar-i = sees) contemplate (ridai) in the mind to understand and walk on - (maarag-u) the path (ka) of, i.e. as commanded by, (har-i) the Almighty. [3.] One who (dhiaaia = pays attention) keeps in mind to be at (charan) the feet of, i.e. be in submission to Divine commands, (antar-i) in (man = mind) thought and (tan = body) deeds, such a (daas = servant) seeker (paaia) finds (har-i) the Almighty, (nidhaan = treasure) the source of (sukh) solace his/her yearning for union with the Almighty is fulfilled and eternal peace attained, says Fifth Nanak. [4.2.56.]

Guru Nanak says on GGS:472 - "sach hovai taan sach paayeeai": "It is only through truth that one can attain Truth (God)." Spiritual awareness in life comes through purity, peace of mind and self-control for the revelation of the spirit within. One has to transform oneself into a new being.
