INNI KAUR

Today’s Hukam, Darbar Sahib, Amritsar - Monday, July 22, 2013

I obtained this precious human life as a reward for my past actions but, without discriminating wisdom, it is wasted in vain. Tell me, without devotional worship of the Divine, of what use are mansions and thrones like those of Indra?

You have not considered the sublime essence of the Name of the Divine, our King; this sublime essence shall cause you to forget all other essences.

We do not know what we need to know, and we have become insane. We do not consider what we should consider; our days are passing away. Our passions are strong, and our discriminating intellect is weak; we have no access to the supreme objective.

We say one thing, and do something else; entangled in endless maya, we do not understand anything. Says Ravidas your slave, O Divine One, I am disillusioned and detached; please, spare me Thy anger, and have mercy on my soul.

Today’s Hukam reminds me that my human birth is very precious. Yet, this priceless life is being wasted for I have not connected with my spirituality. Material wealth that is so enticing will not help me when the Call comes. I feel my ears being pulled in admonishment.

The words of the Third Master, Guru Amar Das, flood into my mind: O my tongue, ears and eyes you are so busy relishing the undesirable essences of life. Your thirst for these has become endless. This is not the purpose of your birth.

The waves of maya are endless. I am drowning.

I recognize that to have come to this realization is, in itself, a huge blessing.

My ardaas: Take away the hunger of maya and replace it with the hunger of naam. Bless me with Thy mercy, for I am your devotee.

The arrogant and greedy human is always in big trouble! There is a Punjabi saying: "kaai eyeai thai kaai geyaai" - "So many come and so many go!"

The whole problem is how to connect with spirituality! Spirituality is naam simran - contemplating God. Unless an individual eliminates the ego, the door to spirituality is not going to open because individuality is related to selfhood and illusion. We do daily prayers in Rehraas that we are blessed with human birth and this is the only opportunity to attain spirituality. However, the ego also originates under God's Will. And it is beyond the scope of a person to strike a balance between naam simran and the ego. A person needs God's help to overcome maya which suffocates spirituality. But His Grace can also, at times, put us in tune with maya.
