INNI KAUR

Today’s Hukam, Darbar Sahib, Amritsar - Monday, July 15, 2013

Deep within my inner being is the longing to meet my Beloved; how can I find the Perfect Guru? Even though a baby may play hundreds of games, it cannot survive without milk. The hunger deep within me is not satisfied, even though I am served hundreds of dishes. My mind and body are filled with love for my Beloved; how can my mind be comforted, without the Blessed Vision?  || 1 ||

Listen, O my dear friends and Siblings of Destiny -- lead me to my True Friend, the Giver of peace. The One who knows all the troubles of my soul; and every day tells me stories of the Divine. I cannot survive without the Divine, even for an instant. I cry out for the Divine, as the song-bird cries for water. Which of Your Excellent Virtues should I contemplate? You save even worthless beings like me.  || 2 ||

I have become sad and depressed, longing for my Husband Divine, O my friend; when will I see my Husband with my eyes? I have forgotten how to enjoy all pleasures; without my Husband Divine, they are of no use at all. These clothes do not bring my body any pleasure; I cannot dress myself. I bow to those friends of mine, who have enjoyed their Beloved Husband Divine.  || 3 ||

I have adorned myself with all sorts of decorations, O my friend, but without my Husband Divine, they are of no use at all. When my Husband does not care for me, O my friend, then my youth passes away, totally useless. Blessed, blessed are the happy soul-brides, O my friend, who are immersed in their Husband. I am a sacrifice to those happy soul-brides, O my friend; I wash their feet forever. || 4 ||

As long as I suffered from duality and doubt, O my friend, I thought that my Husband Divine was far away. But when I met the Perfect True Guru, O my friend, then all my hopes and desires were fulfilled. I have obtained all pleasures and comforts, O my friend; my Husband Divine is all-pervading everywhere. Servant Nanak enjoys Divine Love, O my friend; I fall at the feet of the Guru, the True Guru.  || 5 || 1 || 9 ||

When realization occurs that one is separated from the Source, a deep yearning / longing arises within.

The drop separated from the Ocean. The need to connect with the Source becomes overwhelming.

One changes.

And the journey begins.

Today’s Hukam addresses the longing to that seeker:

“When that state of Divine longing arises within you; seek the company of the ones who have experienced this longing.

"Bow and learn from them.

"Take their advice.

"May this longing turn into Divine Union.”

Beautiful and powerful poetry from the Guru Granth Saheb! When everybody else craves for money and chases after it with great greed and determination, the true, humble, understanding Sikh wants to meditate on the Creator of the universe and praise its beautiful nature, while going about his/her daily routine -- because the Guru teaches him/her that everything else in life causes great turmoil and anxiety. We can watch this truth on our TV screens every second of every day.

Reference to comment by the author that longing occurs within the human body to re-unite with the Source from where we originated! The Source is God! Realization of God within self only comes through Naam Simran. We fail to realize that God dwells within us. The human body has two elements, the body and the soul. The body belongs to the material world and God lives in the soul. It is the rare few who are awakened to reality and remain conscious of God within the body.
