The Month of Poh
[December 14 - January 13]
Poems translated from Punjabi by GURMEET KAUR
1 Guru Nanak [Raag Tukhaari, GGS:1109]
In the month of Poh - frigid
Frost saps
Forests and meadows
Body and mind
Blight
Without you, my love
Why won't you alight?
Giver of Life
Enliven the soul
Come reside
Through the Guru's Shabad
In the color of your love
I vitalize
In all life and forms
Of egg or womb
Of sweat or seed
I perpetually
Behold
Your light
Lord of Mercy
Bequeath the consciousness
Elevated intellect
Your blessed vision
I eternally
Strive
Prays Nanak
If I saturate
In the ambrosial
Nectar of my beloved
I shall
Ever thrive
In the month of Poh - frigid
2 Guru Arjan [Raag Maajh, GGS:135]
In the month of Poh - frigid
Snuggles
The soul bride
In His embrace
Fastened
To the lotus feet
Each breath in his rhythm
Serving
She gains
Eternal protection
Maya
Does not deter
Guru's Shabad is her anchor
Merging
In the one she came from
True love abounds
Cradled
In his caress
Separation does not strike her
Surrendered
Unto the inexplicable
The lover so profound
Saved
Was Nanak
Collapsed at his door
Graced
In his blessings
All comforts pour
Warmth surrounds
In the month of Pokh - frigid.

Wow ... what a blessing on such a frigid morning. The strength of the words and the source of the love make the biting cold melt away. Sometimes I only realize the months are passing when I see your poetry appear to warm my heart.

How lucky is the soul bride (described by Guru Arjan)? To spiritual people, it is the internal weather which matters to them more than the external.
