Sikh-Nova-Scotian Children Help Raise Awareness About Dementia
THE MARITIME SIKH SOCIETY
The Maritime Sikh Society Tornadoes Team, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada, is a group of hardworking dedicated young students who are caring and passionate about science.
We work countless hours building, programming and constantly improving our Lego robot to prepare for competitions, and we put a lot of effort into the tasks and projects required of us. We take pride in our work and enjoy having a hands-on relationship with science that makes learning fun and exciting for all of us.
We are very excited about the project portion of this competition, which
is based on this year’s theme, Senior Solutions. We had to identify a
common problem in seniors and come up with an innovative solution
After meeting with many different people, we found that one in five
seniors live with some type of dementia, which affects their social and
physical health. As a result, our team decided to do more research on
dementia, and learned that the most common type of dementia is
Alzheimer’s disease.
In Nova Scotia, over 15,000 people are living with this disease. We have
talked to some professionals and made presentations within our
community.
Throughout this experience we have learned how serious
Alzheimer’s disease is and how it affects not only the seniors but their
families as well.
To show our support, our team hosted a dinner fundraiser to raise
awareness of this disease and collect funds for the Alzheimer Society.
We prepared a short skit about the symptoms and affects of Alzheimer’s
to educate our audience. This event was a huge success.
Our team is very fortunate to have had this opportunity and hope to
continue working with the Alzheimer Society to raise awareness within
our community.
Finally, we would like to extend a special thank you to Manvinder
Dhillon, who is our teacher, and the coordinator of this project.
