Jagmeet Singh Is On List Of Top National Leadership Candidates For Canada’s New Democratic Party

The speculation, as it does, began moments after Canada’s New Democratic Party (“NDP”) leader Thomas Mulcair announced he would resign follow a devastating leadership review just over a week ago and an unexpected defeat in the federal elections last Fall.

While none of those thought to be contenders for his successor are yet willing to say so - lest they be seen as too eager to rush in - there is a baseline of support for some of the highest profile New Democrats in the country, even those who say they don’t want to run.

Amongst the three top names being bandied about, amongst a longer list, to succeed Mulcair is NDP’s current Ontario Deputy Leader, Jagmeet Singh. The other two are Nathan Cullen from British Columbia and Avi Lewis who is, like Jagmeet, also from Ontario.

Earlier this week, he said he hasn’t made any decisions yet, but that he was somewhat flattered to be included on the list.

The current list of possibilities should be taken with a grain of salt. There are months, possibly even years, before the NDP will formally launch its leadership race and lots can happen before then.

It’s also a small sample at a time when the party faithful are feeling especially battered.
