Western Sydney Sikhs will be counting on their huge number of regular volunteers to clean up two local parks as part of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 6, 2016.
Dozens of groups are involved with the clean up day activities in our local suburbs. Last year, In 2015 an estimated 536,423 volunteers removed 15,915 tonnes of rubbish at 7,232 sites across the country.
With nearly 160 volunteers on their roster, the Western Sydney Sikhs will be cleaning up two sites in Quakers Hill, at Sherwood Park and Wrights Road Reserve.
The volunteers also regularly clean up the areas around their Glenwood Gurdwara.
Sydney Sikhs rank highest in the state of New South Wales for the number of volunteers for Clean Up Australia Day.
“We were planning to do only Sherwood Park, but because we had more people putting their hands up, we decided to do another clean-up at Wrights Reserve,” co-ordinator Kuldip Singh said.
“We hope to have more than 100 people, including families, turning up for the clean-up day, which we take seriously.
“Last year we filled 20 bags at Sherwood Park but we have requested more bags and equipment this time, as we plan to clear more areas.
“Most of the rubbish we clear are bottles, cans, tree branches, though some people even leave their garbage bags in the bushes.”
Like the Clean Up Australia Day committee says: “Every day is Clean Up Australia Day -- so if March doesn’t work for you, you can still join as an every day clean up site by choosing a date that works better for you.”
