Junior Fire Chief for a Day
by DALSON CHEN
Faced with the array of dials and gauges on a fire truck's pumping equipment, Windsor's Junior Fire Chief had one question: Can it make bubbles?
"Yep, it can be bubbly," Fire Department Chief Dave Fields told his temporary replacement, eight-year-old Deep Kaur Sandhu.
Fields went on to explain the use of firefighting foam agents to Deep. It was one more thing for her to learn on Tuesday as Windsor Fire and Rescue's Junior Fire Chief for a Day.
A Grade 3 student at Dougall Avenue Public School (Windsor, Ontario, Canada), Deep Kaur earned her Junior Fire Chief title when her drawing was chosen the winner of the children's fire prevention poster contest held by the Fire Department in October.
BUSY SCHEDULE
On Tuesday morning, a fire truck picked up Deep at her school to begin the day's activities.
From there, she had a busy schedule fulfilling all the responsibilities of her rank: meeting with Mayor Eddie Francis, talking to fire prevention staff, checking in with dispatchers, spending time with firefighters, and exchanging hugs with Sparky - Windsor Fire and Rescue's fuzzy-suited Dalmatian mascot.
"It was really fun," said Deep, who came to Windsor from her native India about a year ago.
Fields said Deep also tackled some official duties complete with paperwork: signing a commendation letter as the real fire chief.
"I'm a man without a job today," Fields said.

What a sweet article! Let's hope that Deep Kaur, obviously a bright and lovely child, grows up with plenty of encouragement that she can become anything she wants to be, including, if she so wishes, a real fire chief!
