Conversation about this article

1: Maan Singh (Los Angeles, U.S.A.), November 18, 2008, 12:35 PM.

Dr. MANMOHAN SINGH, of course. Only twice in the history of the sub-continent has there been a ruler who has governed the land with intelligence, integrity, foresight, and respect for the people ... all people. The first was Ranjit Singh. The second is Manmohan Singh. I nominate the latter as the Man of the Year. In my eyes, he is the chic-est of them all.

2: Navjit Kaur (New Delhi, India), November 18, 2008, 1:07 PM.

I would like to nominate two people instead of one: The Twins, AMRIT and RABINDRA KAUR SINGH. They are artists extraordinaire, having captured our history and culture so well. But they are also so much more: authors, activists, educators, filmmakers, archivists, poets, etc. And ... they so ably represent our best foot forward to the world at large. I cannot think of anyone else who fits the bill better.

3: Jim McNeely (Glasgow, Scotland), November 18, 2008, 2:32 PM.

FAUJA SINGH, the 97-year-old British marathoner. He is an inspiration to the young and old. He has done more for health and fitness for all the people I know than anyone else alive. I look forward to running with him on his Centennial marathon.

4: Pardeep Singh (U.K.), November 18, 2008, 5:30 PM.

AMANDEEP SINGH MADRA - A brilliant historian/researcher who tirelessly works on behalf of the Sikh community. He preserves our past so that we and future generations never forget, encouraging us all to stay aware of current events.

5: Manbir Singh Chowdhary (Irvine, California, U.S.A.), November 18, 2008, 5:41 PM.

I humbly nominate none other than sikhchic.com's own, Sardar I.J. SINGH. In the tradition of Bhai Vir Singh, I.J. Singh's work presents a window through which later generations will see Guru Granth Sahib in all its philosophical, practical, spiritual and aesthetic richness. He possesses a God-given ability to analyze both temporal and metaphysical aspects of Sikhi, with clarity and profundity - much to the benefit of his readers.

6: Ravinder Singh (Sydney, Australia), November 19, 2008, 12:30 AM.

BARACK OBAMA. He has shown even minorities can make it anywhere in the world.

7: Balbir Singh (Birmingham, England), November 19, 2008, 5:25 AM.

I nominate THE WIDOWS OF 1984, collectively. They have stood tall and dignified in their faith, with integrity and grace, despite the terrible crimes committed against them by the general populace, authorities and politicians of India, and despite the neglect shown to them by their own community. They are a daily reminder, a constant prick on our collective conscience ... that justice delayed is a crime that repeats itself every day. For me, each of them is a Chic Sikh because their faces glow ('mukh ujjley') spiritually, right through the horrendous adversities humanity (or the lack of it) has sent their way.

8: Kabir Singh (London, Ontario, Canada), November 19, 2008, 5:32 AM.

Three institutions in our community - THE SIKH COALITION, SALDEF (Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund) and UNITED SIKHS - have done yeoman service in protecting our human rights in the West. They have become pillars of our community. I wish that, soon, one or the other establishes an active and physical presence in every major Sikh centre in the world. It will make a qualitative and positive difference to our children's lives.

9: Waryam Singh (Brampton, Ontario, Canada), November 19, 2008, 8:06 AM.

I too would like to nominate a couple - a mother & son duo: 14-year-old filmmaker ANGAD SINGH and his mom, GURMEET KAUR, from Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. I have seen both of Angad's films - the first last year at Toronto's Spinning Wheel, and the second at this year's festival. It is amazing what this child does to inspire us all. And I know as a parent myself what his mother, a single parent, would have had to do to shape this extraordinarily gifted child. The two of them are great role models, and I am confident we'll hear of bigger things from them as the years move along. The sky is the limit!

10: Mehtab Kaur (Melbourne, Australia), November 19, 2008, 8:11 AM.

For those of us who live in far-flung places - I went to school in Singapore and the U.S. - the website SIKHNET.COM has proved a life-line in religious matters. It has served all our needs, rangng from kirtan and discourse, to easy access to the Guru Granth, to news about the goings-on in the Sikh world. I shudder to think what we would've done without them in this day and age. I nominate it and its staff wholeheartedly.

11: Darshan Makker (New York, U.S.A.), November 19, 2008, 8:24 AM.

The work done by NIKKY GUNINDER KAUR SINGH, I believe, is phenomenal in the area of Sikh studies. Her translations of Gurbani into English are unsurpassed to date. Her thesis presenting the feminine perspective that we've hitherto missed in Guru Granth Sahib is landmark. Her book on Vaisakhi is ground-breaking. And now she has turned to translating Punjabi secular poetry into English ... a task which has mysteriously been overlooked by scholars of every ilk up till now. I've heard her at a couple of conferences and must say that she is a star that we need to recognize and honour in our firmament.

12: Dupinder Gill (Carteret, New Jersey, U.S.A.), November 19, 2008, 9:22 AM.

HARVINDER SINGH PHOOLKA, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, and former Additional Advocate General, Punjab. He has dedicated much of his life to a very important cause dear to the Sikh community. He chose to fight for the victims of the anti-Sikh pogroms on his own. He highlighted the plight of the victims to the public, the court systems and the govt. officials in India. He is the ONLY person who can be credited with keeping alive the fight for justice for the 1984 pogrom victims. Watch some of his interviews on YouTube and it is clear that no other Sikh has stood up for the community in the past two decades as he did. He devoted two decades of his life to fight for this cause which is such a dark page in modern Indian history. He is the most "Chic Sikh" in my view. I hope he gets recognized more by the community for his efforts.

13: Amandeep Singh Madra (London, U.K.), November 19, 2008, 9:54 AM.

I would nominate conservation architect GURMEET KAUR RAI. She has been bravely challenging the thoughtless destruction of Sikh heritage for many years and tirelessly working on restoration projects from Guru-ki-Maseet to the Baba Atal Burj where she has recently discovered the frescoes underneath the infamous bathroom tiles. Where others merely talk and write (like me), she practices and corrects. Few are more worthy.

14: Gurmeet Kaur (Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.), November 19, 2008, 9:56 AM.

VALARIE KAUR has done an immense service to the Sikh Diaspora by taking the stories of hate crimes against Sikh-Americans and other minorities to the wider audience. Her film, "Divided We Fall" has educated hundreds of thousands about the Sikh Identity and her filmmaking, effective distribution and engagement process is historical and inspirational to our young activisits. My 14-year-old son, filmmaker Angad Singh is an example of that new wave of young and promising filmmakers and activisits. I vote for Valarie Kaur.

15: Jassa Singh (Chandigarh, Punjab), November 19, 2008, 2:33 PM.

Prof. DARSHAN SINGH Raagi. His kirtan is ethereal. His discourses are life-transforming. His commitment to Sikhi in its pristine and simple glory is unwavering ... as he has shown over and over again as Jathedar of the Akal Takht a la 1984; as well as in the face of the shenanigans directed against him by the petty politicians of India since then. His current crusade against the silliness we hear over the Dasam Granth is unmatched by any other voice within the Panth. Thus, he represents the highest ideals of Sikhi.

16: Judith Quinones (Los Angeles, U.S.A.), November 19, 2008, 9:21 PM.

It's hard for me to choose between VALARIE KAUR and ANGAD SINGH, but there is no doubt in my mind that both deserve this honor.

17: Bal Kaur (Canada), November 20, 2008, 1:27 AM.

I also nominate THE WIDOWS OF 1984. In connection with the same, I nominate HARPREET KAUR and MANMEET SINGH of Sach Productions, the producers of the film, "The Widow Colony". They are doing great work in creating awareness of the pressing issues in our community.

18: Khushwant Singh (Alpharetta, U.S.A.), November 20, 2008, 10:45 AM.

The title says "Chic Sikh of the Year 2008" and your third para says: "any Sikh or non-Sikh person can be named". They seem to contradict each other. Why would a non-Sikh person be liked to be named the Chic Sikh of the Year? [Editor: Just as no one would object to nominating Baba Farid, Bhagat Kabir or Pir Buddhu Shah as "The Chic Sikh of History", we are open to our readers identifying those who may meet the highest ideals of Sikhi even today.]

19: Lauri Bunting (Ketchum, U.S.A.), November 20, 2008, 11:24 AM.

I would like to nominate ANGAD SINGH and GURMEET KAUR. Angad presented his film at The Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival and spoke afterwards. He courageously encourages kids to be true to themselves and to allow curiosity and knowledge replace prejudice and fear. Gurmeet plays an important role, supporting Angad's passion and desire to express his vision.

20: Jaideep Singh (Chandigarh, Punjab), November 20, 2008, 11:37 AM.

It should be Prime Minister MANMOHAN SINGH.

21: Jasbir Kaur (Bangkok, Thailand), November 20, 2008, 12:38 PM.

I am bowled over by the story of Bhai BALBIR SINGH of Seechewal, as told in your pages. Apart from the incredible seva he has done to the memory of Guru Nanak, he also reminds us so vividly of our duty as Sikhs to take care of our environment. After all, the Kangaa (comb) symbolizes, as one of our Five Articles of Faith, that cleanliness - of the mind, body and the earth we inherit in trust - is central to Sikhi. Bhai Balbir Singh's life-work goes to the very heart of this mission that each one of us is expected to fulfill. I believe we need to honour him for this.

22: Bob Dix (Hailey, U.S.A.), November 20, 2008, 4:42 PM.

I met Angad Singh and his mother, Gurmeet, during our annual Sun Valley Spritual Film Festival. I am a board member of the fesitval and school teacher. I must say that meeting Angad was the highlight of my year. His level of compassion is extraodinary. It is so rare to find our youth so inspired to create a film about the troubles of the world. His insight and understanding masks his age. His mother's love and guidance is so evident in her son. The world will be a better place with kids like Angad. ANGAD SINGH and GURMEET KAUR are most deserving of this honor, for they emulate the future hope the world so desperatelty needs.

23: Arvinder Singh Kang (University of Mississippi, MS, U.S.A.), November 21, 2008, 2:12 AM.

There are three Sikhs I would like to nominate. HARINDER SINGH of Sikh Research Institute - for his efforts in bridging the gap between new age Sikhs and scientifically studied history of Sikhs and Sikh lifestyle, for his tireless efforts in replicating his ideas using new forms of communication. GURUMUSTAK SINGH - I do not know how many Sikhs, who had gone away from Sikhi returned back home by a single effort of this one person, being a source provider of Guru's knowledge. And Prof DARSHAN SINGH, for being a non-political source of knowledge of Sikhism, for his commitment to the ideals of Sikhism, and being a living example of his principles.

24: Baljit Singh (Kharagpur, India), November 21, 2008, 10:12 AM.

The work done by Sardar SARAN SINGH, a senior and highly acclaimed officer of the Indian Administrative Service - now retired and in his 90s (I suspect) - deserves the highest honour we can bestow on him. He has shepherded the esteemed journal, The Sikh Review, through thick and thin during last few decades, and helps to continue its half-century long tradition of providing the Sikh diaspora with well thought out, balanced and timely articles throwing light on the message of Sikhi. He is a man of incredible courage and intellect, as it was especially displayed during the difficult period following, first, the 1984 outrages by Mrs. Gandhi, and then by her government and lackeys after her hastened departure from the monumental mess she had created.

25: Amrit Kaur (London, England), November 21, 2008, 10:18 AM.

Bhai BALDEEP SINGH has helped revive, record and archive, as well as teach, the fundamentals of Sikh musicology to a generation which had found itself isolated from its rich musical traditions. He is now embarked on creating a permanent institution to expand on his work and make it part of the regular curricula in classical music circles across the globe. Both Sikh and non-Sikh students on several continents can attest to the endless energies he devotes to this cause.

26: B.J. Singh (New Delhi, India), November 21, 2008, 11:00 AM.

REEMA KAUR ANAND is an unsung hero. A well-known and well-published author - she wrote THE book on the late Saint of Amritsar, Bhagat Puran Singh, e.g. She is an acclaimed filmmaker - her films celebrate Sikhi at its best and, at the same time, daringly explore the current issues confronting Sikhs and Punjab. She currently publishes and edits a newly-started journal focusing on the accomplishments of Sikhs and Punjabis in the diaspora. And her personal work - hands on, at a heavy emotional cost - with the 1984 widows of Trilokpuri, in helping empower them into becoming independent and self-supporting - remains unsurpassed. You couldn't go wrong in selecting her.

27: Brijinder Khurana (Delhi, India), November 24, 2008, 2:40 AM.

I feel all the leaders and dignitaries should not be nominated for this award because this award should go to a person who should be a Sikh and must have done something great for the upliftment of the Sikh community. The leaders or high officials are persons who are famous because of their positions but original heros are usually overlooked. The committee should choose from the bunch of people who are really great in their deeds such as Bhagat PURAN SINGH ji. Even though he is no longer with us today, the selfless efforts he has done for humanity are matchless.

28: Harman  (East Windsor), November 24, 2008, 2:35 PM.

SANDEEP SINGH CABERWAL ... he is a positive role model for young Sikhs everywhere. He proves to them that wearing a turban is something to truly take pride in.

29: Tarsem Singh (Milton Keynes), November 24, 2008, 4:06 PM.

GURUMUSTUK SINGH of Sikhnet - he single-handedly has united, inspired and connected Sikhs of different races all over the world.

30: Arvinder Uppal (U.S.A.), November 24, 2008, 4:22 PM.

THE KAUR FOUNDATION. A Sikh women's organisation dedicating itself to educating non-Sikhs about Sikhs using movies and books, etc. as media and tools. Moving the entire Sikh community forward, and emboldening the Sikh community to get involved in a non-political environment of educating others about ourselves, while gathering political strength as a community.

31: Arvind Mehta (Mumbai, India), November 25, 2008, 10:45 AM.

Sardar BHAGWANT SINGH DILAWARI is a true saint in the best tradition of Sikhism. A senior foreign service diplomat turned community sevak, he now devotes his life to serving lepers in the Leprosy Ashram at Tapoban, Arravati (Maharashtra). To those in need at this haven founded by S. Bhagwant Singh ji, he is father and mother, mentor and guide, doctor and nurse, teacher and friend. Reema Kaur Anand has told his life-story in a wonderful film, but I feel he still remains an undiscovered gem to much of the world today.

32: Sumandeep Singh (Virginia, U.S.A.), November 28, 2008, 3:43 PM.

Without a doubt, Prof. I.J. SINGH!

33: Carolyn Flournoy Stanley (Roswell, Georgia, U.S.A.), November 28, 2008, 8:49 PM.

I am a senior citizen and a neighbor of a high school student named ANGAD SINGH, and am a participant in his documentary, "One Light". We have been neighbors since he was six years old and long before he made "One Light". When he was thirteen years old, he was doing exactly what his movie inspires the world to do - build a better world by building a friendly neighborhood - one person at a time. This young man has filled our neighborhood with cheer, loving kindness, and brought us closer together. We help one another with our pets, chores, and share meals. We no longer hesitate to share good times or bad times with one another. There seems to be much indifference, fear, and hatred in the world today; hence, his efforts to better humanity by bridging the gap of differences. Being open and kind to one another is the biggest need of this present day. His respectful demeanor, fine scholarship, and athleticism are more adornments on his character and a testimony to his faith and fine upbringing. I would like to see the world become inspired by his efforts and take its own step of progress toward peace and love. For this reason, I nominate Angad as our very able ambassador for peace and love.

34: Harpreet Singh (India), December 01, 2008, 4:44 PM.

I think this kind of award needs be given to the following wonderful institutions which are addressing the burning issues of the day: 1 Organizations like UNITED SIKHS, SIKH COALITION, SALDEF, etc. Their role is amongst the most important in the present era, for the Sikh diaspora. 2 We need more KAUR FOUNDATIONs to tackle the issue of self-esteem and the re-infusion of Sikh priorities amongst our young women.

35: Ravinder Kaur Singh (Tampa, Florida, U.S.A.), December 01, 2008, 10:50 PM.

Extraordinary work done by "Mother and Son", GURMEET KAUR and ANGAD SINGH. May Waaheguru keep them both in chardi kalaa.

36: Harpreet Singh (Flushing, New York, U.S.A.), December 02, 2008, 3:49 PM.

Wherever I see, I see great people, each one in my eye a good choice to be nominated as the Chic Sikh of the Year 2008. But when I ask each one of them spiritually, they all say "Oh, NO! Please, not me! I won't be happy with you if you name me!" But I must name at least one of them: Please note that this Gursikh is beyond the boundaries of time, such as 2008. His wonderful writings are in fact relevant in any year and for many, many years to come. He is none other than Bhai VIR SINGH. Read any of his writings and it shall re-charge you even today, whichever state of mind you are in!

37: Janet Dennis (Hailey, Idaho, U.S.A.), December 03, 2008, 7:31 PM.

I would like to nominate ANGAD SINGH and his mother GURMEET KAUR. Angad presented his film at The Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival and spoke afterwards to about 300 of our high school students. He was amazingly inspirational. He graciously answered questions about his turban, his religion, his daily life. He showed his film and many students were greatly inspired to go do good in the world. He courageously encourages kids to be true to themselves and to allow curiosity and knowledge replace prejudice and fear. Gurmeet plays an important role, supporting Angad's passion and desire to express his vision.

38: Gurmeet Kaur (Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.), December 04, 2008, 10:23 AM.

I appreciate the nominations and kind words by all the admirers of Angad Singh (my son), but I don't deserve any of the recognition. Isn't there a mother (or a father, or a grandparent) behind every one doing great things? Since he is a minor, I do tag along - someone has to iron his clothes, make sure he is fed and makes the events on time. I also send his films to the festivals. But that's about it. I would also like to add to my previous nomination of VALARIE KAUR. I would like to add SHARAT RAJU to that nomination. He is the co-director and producer of "Divided We Fall" and even though a non-Sikh, he has shown extraordinary drive, compassion and efforts to further the cause of Sikh identity and issues faced by our community through both his award winning films. In 2008, if we as a community have to point out one single project that took our cause to the mainstream, it would be "Divided We Fall". VALARIE KAUR and SHARAT RAJU both deserve the highest accolades for their intelligent, strategic work behind their 2008 tours reaching 60 cities with 100 screenings.

39: Harmeet Singh (Gaithersburg, Maryland, U.S.A.), December 05, 2008, 8:02 AM.

I nominate HARPREET KAUR of Sach Productions for shedding light on issues which have taken a back seat for too long!

40: Harmander Singh (Austin, Texas, U.S.A.), December 05, 2008, 12:31 PM.

I would like to nominate HARPREET KAUR of Sach Productions for her work on The Widow Colonies. Harpreet Kaur and Manmeet Singh have done an excellent job with the movie, writing and editing the movie themselves. The issues they bring to the forefront are of utmost importance.

41: Harman Singh (Philadelphia, U.S.A.), December 07, 2008, 2:47 PM.

Dr. MANMOHAN SINGH, for representing Sikhs and Sikh ideals with honour and dignity in India and abroad.

42: Daljit Singh Devgun (Brampton, Canada), December 08, 2008, 1:16 AM.

The Chic Sikh of the Year should be my son, ISHPREET SINGH Devgun. He is handsome, smart, intelligent and an attractive personality.

43: Mohan Singh (Don Mills, Ontario, Canada), December 08, 2008, 12:32 PM.

I would like to nominate JASMEET KAUR Sidhu. If I may borrow from her bio: "Jasmeet Kaur Sidhu is a Canadian journalist, and a social and international activist. Her research and social initiatives include international health, violence against women, HIV/AIDS, youth empowerment and climate change. She currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is the founder of the Peel Environmental Youth Alliance (PEYA), an umbrella organization working to implement environmental programs in all 220 Peel Region schools (in Canada). PEYA is funded and supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Laidlaw Foundation and Ecosource. She served as a member of Toronto Star's Community Editorial Board and currently sits on the Board of Directors of Youth-in-Motion. She is on the Canadian Youth Delegation to Poznan, Poland for the 2008 United Nations Climate Change conference, and has traveled to Kenya and Namibia for environmental and HIV/AIDS community and research initiatives. Jasmeet is also recipient of the Top '20 Under 20' Award and, on November 25, 2008 she was named by the Globe and Mail and the Women's Executive Network as one of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100.

44: Hardeep Singh (Alpharetta, Georgia, U.S.A.), December 08, 2008, 1:21 PM.

I am sure there are many Sikh youth whose achievements and services make them eligible and winner of this award. From my limited social sphere and direct experience and observation, I would like to nominate ANGAD SINGH of Roswell, Georgia. Angad's efforts in "One Light" brought out the message of Peace and resulted in educating hundred and thousands of people about prime fundamentals of our faith. His efforts in "Roots and Wings" addressed the present day challenges faced by our youth and the film inspires us to believe in ourselves and our form of creation. Personally, I had an opportunity to share some moments and thoughts with Angad during my role as his Punjabi school facilitator. His deep insight and interpretation of any topic or subject was very sensible and thoughtful.

45: Bakhsish Singh (Brampton, Canada), December 09, 2008, 2:54 AM.

I would like to nominate Prof. DARSHAN SINGH, ex-jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. His unparalleled seva for Sikhi, prachaar with logic, against all odds, even during the black days after 1984, his stand against RSS/Babas/the distortion of Dasam Granth/other evils which have intruded Sikhism, his dedicated and futuristic approach, his discourses of Gurbani with real life examples, all of these make him the best candidate for this award.

46: Kavi Raj Singh (Tustin, U.S.A.), December 09, 2008, 2:29 PM.

I would like to nominate Captain KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH and the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GURMAT STUDIES, Inc. (IIGS) jointly for this Award. He has, through the IIGS, worked at bettering the lives of the Sikh Youth and sadh sangats voluntarily, selflessly and whole-heartedly for the past 53 years. IIGS has held over 80 camps worldwide and touched the lives of tens of thousands of people worldwide. I can't imagine anyone else deserving this honor more than this organization and Capt. Harbhajan Singh himself.

47: Tejinder Singh (Chino Hills, California, U.S. A), December 09, 2008, 7:29 PM.

I second Kavi Raj Singh's comments and nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH (Bhaapa ji) for the Chic Sikh of the Year 2008.

48: Rajinder Singh (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), December 09, 2008, 8:41 PM.

S. HARBINDER SINGH Rana has done phenomenal work through the Anglo-Sikh Heritage Trail and the Maharaja Duleep Singh Centenary Trust, from his HQ in England, to identify, demarcate, preserve, archive, exhibit and celebrate stories and artifacts from our rich history. Not only is he a tail-blazer but he is already having a positive impact across the diaspora. He, I believe, would be a worthy candidate for "Chic Sikh of the Year".

49: Erica Bains (Orinda, U.S.A.), December 10, 2008, 1:55 AM.

I would like to nominate Captain HARBHAJAN SINGH. He is a.k.a. Papa ji to thousands of youth around the world, especially here in the U.S.A.. Through his IIGS organization, Papa ji has one goal for the world Sikh community - educate them of their roots, their religion, and their religious principles. He has dedicated himself to teaching youth of today and finding solutions on how to improve the education needs for our future generations. His patience, his love and caring, his willingness to dedicate his life to further education in Sikhi for children all around the world, has touched so many people and changed so many of our lives. His contribution to the Sikh community can't be measured. I believe Papa ji deserves to be the "Chic Sikh of the Year".

50: Manika K. (Dubai, U.A.E.), December 10, 2008, 10:30 AM.

I would like to nominate Papa ji (Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH) and IIGS for this award. Papa ji's selfless devotion to educating young Sikhs from all over the world about the teachings of Guru Nanak and how to apply these teachings to our everyday lives, have benefitted Sikh communities living all over the world. The youth are the future and Papa ji has spent his life humbly working for this.

51: Harnam Kaur (London, Ontario, Canada), December 10, 2008, 11:52 AM.

Sgt. BALTEJ SINGH Dhillon of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) made history some time ago in becoming the first turbaned officer in the RCMP. Since then, he has been a Sikh ambassador around the world in convincing a variety of police forces to follow Canada's example. In addition, he continues to serve the community today in giving his time selflessly to youth camps and community projects. I can't imagine a more chic Sikh than him in today's world.

52: Maninder Singh (New Delhi, India), December 10, 2008, 1:35 PM.

wish to nominate the person who changed my life (and many others around the world) and brought me closer to my religion, my culture, and the discipline of Sikhi. Sikh youth around the world know this person as "Papaji" ... he is Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH: a person who is passing on the torch of Sikhi and Sikh culture to our youth. Please check out: http://www.sikhchic.com/article-detail.php?id=305&cat=8. He really deserves to be "The Chic Sikh of the Year 2008".

53: Harbani Singh (New Delhi, India), December 10, 2008, 3:21 PM.

There are many Sikhs that I could nominate for this award. But I truly feel Papa ji (Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH) deserves this award. He has worked so hard for the IIGS (International Institute of Gurmat Studies) and has worked towards improving the lives of many people. With his great knowledge of our religion, and through his lectures he has touched many lives. He definitely is a chic Sikh!

54: Kamalpreet Kaur (United Kingdom), December 10, 2008, 3:48 PM.

I would like to nominate Papa ji Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH and IIGS jointly for the "Chic Sikh of the Year 2008" Award. Papa ji, with his unrelenting services to the panth and contibution to Sikhi, has changed many lives. The IIGS mission to promote Sikhi has been successful in encouraging and supporting Sikh youth. Papaji deserves every bit of the award.

55: Aman Singh (Mumbai, India), December 10, 2008, 8:33 PM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH who initiated the International Institute of Gurmat Studies (IIGS), for this Award. Papaji, through IIGS, has worked towards enhancing the lives of the Sikh youth voluntarily and whole-heartedly for the past 53 years.

56: Jasvinderpal Singh (Bangkok, Thailand), December 11, 2008, 12:04 AM.

I would like to nominate IIGS and Papa ji (Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH) for their untiring efforts in conveying the Guru's message to the Sikh youth through camps.

57: Simran Kaur (Pune, India), December 11, 2008, 12:43 AM.

We can mould clay only when it is wet and soft. That is what Papa ji has achieved by selflessly guiding us young children and the Sikh youth through the IIGS camps held all over the world. Through his dedication, patience and hardwork, he has conducted fun and learning camps where we discover more about our religion, have healthy discussions, meet like-minded friends and form a support group through the IIGS family. The yougsters need guidance and answers and Papa ji tries his best to help us appreciate our religion and our Gurus' sacrifices and stay true to our Sikhi roots. With all my good wishes, I would like to nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH and all the people involved in IIGS.

58: Harpreet Singh (Patiala, India), December 11, 2008, 12:47 AM.

I would like to recommend Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH of the International Institute of Gurmat Studies. Under his dynamic leadership and efforts, this institution is working globally for the promotion of Sikhi.

59: Ekta Kaur (New Delhi, India), December 11, 2008, 1:34 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH, who is lovingly known as Papa ji by everyone. He, through his extraordinary and selfless devotion to the cause of the Panth, changed many lives including my own. He has created so much love for Sikhism amongst youth worldwide. He is definitely a chic Sikh!

60: Raman (Canada), December 11, 2008, 1:54 AM.

I nominate the producer and director of "The Widow Colony" - MANMEET SINGH and HARPREET KAUR.

61: Adesh Singh (New Delhi, India), December 11, 2008, 2:24 AM.

The one person who I really take as my idol and because of whom this great organisation "IIGS" is going ahead by Baba ji's grace, is our loving Papa ji (Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH). Thanks to him, at IIGS we can see the Sikh spirit rise.

62: Manveet Kaur Sethi (India), December 11, 2008, 4:57 AM.

I would like to nominate Papa ji - Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH. Through IIGS (International Institute of Gurmat Studies), he has changed the lives of many Sikh youth and has helped them to know their religion better.

63: Simrandeep Singh (Mumbai, India), December 11, 2008, 5:09 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH who is the founder of the International Institute of Gurmat Studies (IIGS), for this Award. This camp has changed my life completely.

64: Mandeep Singh (India), December 11, 2008, 9:33 AM.

I would like to nominate JASDEEP SINGH. He is a young Sikh boy from India. He has written a book, "Sikhism and Beyond", presenting the current ideology of the Sikh Youth. I really loved reading that book and I think every young Sikh should read it. The book's URL: http://www.lulu.com/content/841415

65: Dr. Jagmeet Kaur (Bhopal, India), December 11, 2008, 9:54 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH of IIGS. The main quality of a leader is to be able to inpire awe. He is one person who I know who is truly able to do that. Every child coming back from an IIGS camp comes back with so much love for Sikhi and the Guru Granth Sahib. In fact, I would strongly recommend making it compulsory for every Sikh child to at least attend one IIGS camp.

66: Karanjit Singh (Mumbai, India ), December 11, 2008, 11:43 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH of the International Institute of Gurmat Studies (IIGS), for this recognition.

67: Prabhu Singh Khalsa (Española, New Mexico, U.S.A.), December 11, 2008, 3:48 PM.

I would nominate GURUMUSTUK SINGH Khalsa. Sikhnet is hands-down the best website on the internet. Even sites like this would be unknown if it wasn't for Sikhnet. Also, I would nominate GURMEET KAUR and ANGAD SINGH. They're pretty awesome!

68: Gurpreet Kaur (Chino Hills, U.S.A.), December 11, 2008, 4:06 PM.

I would definitely nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH of IIGS, also known by everyone as Papa ji, for the Chic Sikh award. Papa ji has worked tirelessly for the Sikh community for the longest time and inspired hundreds of Sikhs to join him in Guru's seva. The spark of Sikhi that has been kindled in the hearts of thousands of young Sikhs around the world totally inspired by Papa ji is a phenomenal acheivement ... spreading the word of the Guru around the world through Sikh youth camps, Kirtan Darbars, speeches, etc. .. He is the only person I know who has just one focus in life - spread love of the Guru!

69: Balbir Kaur (New Delhi, India), December 11, 2008, 5:33 PM.

Controversial though some consider him, I don't think any other scholar alive today has created the amount of quality scholarship on the Sikh Religion as W.H. McLEOD of New Zealand has. I hope you'll be able to get past the narrowmindedness of the few who hound him today to recognize him as one easily worthy of this Award.

70: Ashmeet Kaur (Kurukshetra, India), December 12, 2008, 12:16 AM.

I would recommend the name of Sardar JAGJIT SINGH Dardi as the Chic Sikh of the Year 2008. He has done a tremendous job for the promotion of Punjabi and Sikhi. He started the Sikh-owned TV Channel Chardikala TimeTV, a very beautiful and popular Punjabi magazine - also called Chardi Kala - as well as a newspaper of the same name. He has established professionally Sikh Schools and colleges and many scholarships therein for Sikh children, and made remarkable strides for Sikh and Punjabi journalism.

71: Jasprit Kaur (Laurel, U.S.A.), December 12, 2008, 12:34 PM.

I nominate HARPREET KAUR, the director of "Widow Colony" for her extreme passion and courage reflected in making an absolutely genuine and touching depiction of a chapter of our history that few dare or care to reflect on.

72: Kirpal Singh (Daytona Beach, Florida, U.S.A.), December 12, 2008, 4:46 PM.

I nominate GURUKA SINGH Khalsa and his group at Sikhnet.com for their marvellous and persistent work to awaken and connect the worldwide Sikh Community. They are helping us appreciate our heritage and potential to do good to ourselves and the whole humanity by following gurbani and Sikh history meaningfully.

73: Amritpan Kaur (Berkleley, California, U.S.A.), December 12, 2008, 6:24 PM.

KAVNEET SINGH Alag, the progressive voice of the San Francisco Bay Area Sikh community and behind the scenes man at SALDEF has truly served as an inspiration to all of us here at Berkeley. His devoted work may go unnoticed, however the ways and means by which he has personally inspired and uplifted children of all ages throughout California with his charming smile, courageous demeanor and his uncanny ability to connect with people of all ages, has truly made us reflect on how a good Sikh should live his life. It has been an honor knowing him.

74: Rattanamol Singh (Berkeley, California, U.S.A.), December 13, 2008, 2:56 AM.

Over the past few months, I have had the honor of knowing KAVNEET SINGH Alag. The ways by which he has inspired us students here to follow the path of Sikhi is incredible. His immense knowledge and captivating speaking ability have moved us all. He is clearly an ideal Chic Sikh.

75: Achint Kaur (Baroda, India), December 13, 2008, 6:59 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH (Papa ji) and the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GURMAT STUDIES, Inc. (IIGS) for this Award. This organization, through its vision and management, has strengthened the beliefs of countless budding Sikhs in our Guru's teachings. They surely deserve acknowledgment and much more.

76: Brij Singh (Milan, Italy), December 13, 2008, 12:55 PM.

I'm surprised that no one's named India's Grand Old Man of Letters, KHUSHWANT SINGH yet. I know he's quirky, but which hero in the world - other than saints - hasn't been eccentric or controversial? His History of the Sikhs was not only ground-breaking but remains one of the definitive books on the subject. He popularized the history of the Sikh Kingdoms through his other publications. A noted journalist and columnist, editor, author and novelist, historian, humorist ... he's one who is a daily reminder to all that Sikh intellectuals continue to stand in the forefront of an otherwise troubled land. Wasn't he the one - one of a very few - who had the gumption to speak out contemporaneously against the 1984 outrages against the Sikhs? I nominate him whole-heartedly.

77: Ramnik Kaur (Chino Hills, California, U.S.A.), December 13, 2008, 6:10 PM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH and the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GURMAT STUDIES, Inc. (IIGS) jointly for this Award.

78: Bhavreet Singh (Berkeley, California, U.S.A.), December 14, 2008, 1:10 AM.

KAVNEET SINGH Alag has been a great friend to me. One day, when I grow up, I wish to become as involved in the community as Kavi. His amazing speaking ability has inspired many in the Bay Area to go above and beyond. Go, Kavi!

79: Sadeev Singh (India), December 14, 2008, 11:42 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH (Papa ji) and IIGS for this honour. Over the past many decades, this gentleman and organization have tirelessly worked at strengthening the roots of the Sikh community all over the world. In my opinion, we must recognize and support people and organizations like IIGS if we ever want to see our community to grow and go in the right direction. Picking Papaji/IIGS as the Chic Sikh of the year will be our way of saying 'thank you' for all your years of dedication, love and caring.

80: Lisa (Clovis, California, U.S.A.), December 14, 2008, 7:28 PM.

Bhai MANMOHAN SINGH! He rocks - he did so much for us!

81: Japjiv Singh (Mumbai, India), December 15, 2008, 7:03 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH (Papa ji) and the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GURMAT STUDIES, Inc. (IIGS) for this Award. This organization has managed to imbibe in today's youth the lessons of our rich traditions; has encouraged people to take amrit; and has influenced many to follow the Guru's path. All this for many of us would not have been possible without the efforts of Papa ji.

82: Mandeep Singh (New Delhi, India), December 16, 2008, 5:27 AM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH for this award. He is a blessed soul and has single-handedly made a difference in the lives of many young Sikh boys and girls. He has encouraged youngsters to take amrit ki daat, to keep their kesh and follow the teachings of our Guru. His selfless efforts over three decades makes him the ideal choice for "Chic Sikh of the Year 2008"

83: Balkar Singh (Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.), December 16, 2008, 11:51 AM.

I think WARIS SINGH AHLUWALIA is the chic-est of Sikhs today. He has opened new doors for the community in Hollywood - an industry which especially requires being "chic" as a basic prerequisite. Entry into that territory is fundamentally important for us if we are to dispel the misinformation out there about us. Waris also been a solid ambassador for our community, with no ifs and buts about his commitment to Sikhi.

84: Gurashish Singh (India), December 16, 2008, 5:53 PM.

I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH (Papa ji) and the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GURMAT STUDIES, Inc. (IIGS) for this Award.

85: Amardeep (U.S.A.), December 16, 2008, 6:13 PM.

Baba IQBAL SINGH of Kalgidhar Society, Baru Sahib (barusahib.org) is a towering figure, to be able to move millions and dedicated people to the wonderful cause of education, social welfare, etc.

86: Ajit Kaur (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), December 16, 2008, 6:52 PM.

As a soldier and a policeman - oddly enough, this young man manages to hang on to both jobs, because both employers value his extraordinary skills - Major HARJIT SINGH Sajjan has already done more for his community, his country and for the world at large, than most people I know. As a Canadian soldier, he has served repeated and perilous stints in Afghanistan - he is currently there now as advisor to the senior brass there. In Vancouver, when he is not soldiering, he serves with the Police Department as a police detective. Smart and chic as only a Sardar can be, he is the perfect candidate for this year's Chic Sikh of the Year Award.

87: Rajan Chakravarty (Delhi, India), December 17, 2008, 12:49 AM.

I would like to nominate KHUSHWANT SINGH (of Chandigarh), a journalist, a farmer and now an author. Over the years, Khushwant has written about Sikh issues in the media with both flair and sensitivity. Besides, at a time when India faces unprecedented crises, you need modern thinking men who are firmly in touch with their roots. Khushwant is one such person - a fine writer and a finer human being, and above all a farmer who understands agrarian issues, issues that have to be sorted out if India is to take its rightful place as a world power.

88: Maan Singh (Bangkok, Thailand), December 17, 2008, 5:53 AM.

Throughout my life, if I have seen anyone doing "Nishkaam Sewa", it's Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH ji (Papa ji) of the Institute of Gurmat Studies. I nominate Papa ji.

89: Kamin Bedi (Punjab), December 18, 2008, 8:17 AM.

Of course, Chandigarh's own KHUSHWANT SINGH. His book ("Sikhs Unlimited") on diaspora Sikhs is absolutely fantastic.

90: Amardeep (U.S.A.), December 18, 2008, 11:33 AM.

I also feel that the award should go to an individual whose struggle is long and results not clearly in sight. Every bit of encouragement counts for that individual. Though everyone mentioned and many more are doing great work, they are also have been or are being rewarded in many ways. Therefore, let this award be a pat of encouragement too. Sardar HARVINDER SINGH Phoolka probably needs all our prayers and encouragement.

91: I.J. Singh (New York, U.S.A.), December 18, 2008, 12:53 PM.

Twenty-four years later, HARVINDER SINGH Phoolka's crusade remains a lonely nmission - and so necessary. If we don't honor him, who will? And if not now, when? The only alternative would be a computer-generated Sikh icon that is also gender-free, for there are so many Sikhs - young and old, men and women - that are so deserving.

92: Navneet Singh (Columbia), December 18, 2008, 8:10 PM.

I would like to nominate HARPREET KAUR and MANMEET SINGH for their excellent work in creating 'The Widow Colony' documentary. God knows how many hurdles they must have gone through in order to create this documentary. Dealing with the Indian media, police, politicians, etc. was probably very hard. It has been over two decades and we still see people referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre as Hindu-Sikh riots. This documentary clears those doubts. They have done an excellent job for the panth and may Akal Purakh bless them.

93: Anhad Singh (Los Angeles, U.S.A.), December 19, 2008, 3:05 AM.

I too would like to nominate Captain Kanwar HARBHAJAN SINGH. He's inspiring. + He wins at life.

94: Santokh Virdi (Toronto, Canada), December 19, 2008, 10:38 AM.

I would like to see ISHMEET SINGH being nominated as 'The Chic Sikh of the Year 2008'. He was just nineteen years old and attained celebrity status and touched millions of people around the globe. He was always umble and polite, well dressed and well respected not only by his community but also loved by people of every religion. Ishmeet's first album was a religious Gurbani album called Satgur Tumre Kaaj Saware. Even respected by great people like Lata, Manmohan Singh and all political parties who took time to pay respects when he passed away.

95: Harpal Singh (Virginia, U.S.A. ), December 19, 2008, 5:31 PM.

I too would like to nominate a couple - a mother & son duo: 14-year-old filmmaker ANGAD SINGH and his mom, GURMEET KAUR, from Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

96: Kiratdeep Singh (Michigan, U.S.A. ), December 19, 2008, 5:35 PM.

I nominate ANGAD SINGH from Atlanta, Georgia, for the 'The Chic Sikh of the Year 2008' Award.

97: Brijinder Khurana (Delhi, India), December 20, 2008, 12:55 AM.

I have studied the contributions of Sardar HARVINDER SINGH Phoolka as listed on the net, whatever was available. I also appreciate the details penned by Dr. I.J. Singh by nominating him, spelling out his long and selfless fight for the rights of and justice for the victims of the 1984 massacres. I feel S. Harvinder Singh and his wife (SARDARNI PHOOLKA) both deserve the nomination for Chic Sikh of the Year, because she was the pillar of strength for the Sardar in his fight against injustice.

98: Dr.Onkar Singh  (Mohali, Punjab), December 21, 2008, 8:36 AM.

99: Gurucharan Singh (India), December 21, 2008, 2:06 PM.

I would nominate Capt. Kanwar Harbhajan Singh of IIGS for this award. He has dedicated his life to a cause that has helped umpteen others in finding meaning and direction in their life.

100: Zoravar Singh (Oakville, Ontario, Canada), December 21, 2008, 8:04 PM.

I would like to nominate Bhai DYA SINGH of Australia and his group. They have put Sikh kirtan/ spiritual music on the World Music map, and have also, at the same time, inspired hundreds of thousands of Sikhs in the diaspora to turn to the beauty and riches of our gurbani. Dya Singh has proved to be Sikhi's Roving Ambassador: he delights, entertains, moves, inspires, informs and educates our youth from continent to continent, from season to season, relentlessly. May he and his band be blessed with perennial energy, good health and prosperity.

101: Adiraj Singh (India), December 22, 2008, 2:47 PM.

KHUSHWANT SINGH of Chandigarh. Definitely. He has given the Sikhs a voice in mainstream media as well as brought their issues to the forefront.

102: Gurpreet (U.S.A), December 23, 2008, 6:51 PM.

The WIDOW COLONY is a window into our past that no one wants to look through. The director and producer, HARPREET KAUR and MANMEET SINGH have brought forth the bone-chilling facts to us, the generation that has surprisingly moved on. I nominate them for their courage, dedication and resolve in setting history straight by depicting the true face of Indian democracy and the anti-Sikh pogroms of 1984.

103: Gurjit Kaur (New Delhi, India), December 24, 2008, 12:26 PM.

I would like to nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH of IIGS for the Chic Sikh of the Year 2008 for his selfless service to the Sikh community.

104: Bikram Singh (Atlanta, Georgia), December 24, 2008, 2:04 PM.

This accolodate in my mind is well deserved by two Sikhs for the service done for the diaspora in the year 2008 and in a very chic manner. They are VALARIE KAUR and ANGAD SINGH. I have had a chance to listen to both. What they both have achieved in this year, our big institutions have been unable to in many, many years. Untiringly presenting at schools, universities, film festivals, bringing the message of tolerance to the masses, informing them about our egalitarian faith and, most of all, inspiring them to action, they have served the biggest need of the time. I could not have said it better than the previous nomimations about these two but I do want to say one thing. They are both 'sava lakh', each doing the job of the proverbial 125,000. Truly, the most deserving Chic Sikhs of Year 2008!

105: Jaiteg Singh (Patiala, Punjab), December 24, 2008, 6:53 PM.

I recommend the name of Sardar JAGJIT SINGH Dardi, Chairman of The ChardiKala Group, the person who dedicated all his life for the promotion of Punjabi and Sikh Media. He is the first Sikh journalist who has been able to run a Sikh newspaper, Sikh schools and colleges, and a Sikh Satellite TV Channel with the name of ChardiklaTIMETV, all independently, armed with his own courage and efforts.

106: Gunneeta (Mumbai, India), December 25, 2008, 1:33 AM.

I would like to nominate GURMUSTUK SINGH of www.Sikhnet.com for his selfless role in reaching out to millions of Sikh masses with just a small team of people. Also, would like to nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH of IIGS for his relentless service in inspiring young Sikh children through his camps all over the world.

107: H. Kaur (Chandigarh, Punjab), December 25, 2008, 6:45 AM.

Nice to see so many entries. I feel I am just in time to add mine as well. Well, I did not see RABBI SHERGILL being nominated anywhere. ISHMEET SINGH has been nominated. These are a couple of individuals who have made their unique and courageous mark in a cosmopolitan world. A strong nomination would still be HARINDER SINGH of SikhRI who has been into a very innovative field of work himself in addition to bringing on platform other good works of fellow Sikhs. Everything you see on www.sikhri.org is his brainchild. He is a visionary for sure. Kudos for the good work! I would also like to bring in the name of NANAKSHAHI TRUST for the wonderful work they are doing by coming up with the Punjab Digital Library. I agree that young film-makers certainly need to be encouraged who would serve as a good example for other youngsters. I, however, found both SikhRI and Nanakshahi Trust to be doing some of those classic projects that no one else thinks of doing ... so they stand out for me.

108: Kanwarpreet Singh (Jalandhar City, Punjab ), December 25, 2008, 1:08 PM.

I would like to nominate Capt. HARBHAJAN SINGH and IIGS jointly for the "Chic Sikh of the Year 2008" Award. Papa ji always keeps his spirit high with the grace of almighty God. I'm very much surprised seeing what he is doing at his age ... work that no one else can do better. Papa ji deserves every bit of the award.

109: Karan Singh (Tustin, U.S.A.), December 26, 2008, 12:21 PM.

In my humble opinion, this award should be presented to someone who has dedicated his entire life(60+ yrs) in doing Guru's seva and reaching out to thousands of Sikhs by holding Sikh youth camps, and divans around the globe. I would like to nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH for the "The chic Sikh of the Year 2008" Award.

110: Prabhneet Kaur (Chino Hills, U.S.A.), December 26, 2008, 5:29 PM.

I nominate Capt. KANWAR HARBHAJAN SINGH for the "Chic Sikh of the Year 2008" Award for his unfaltering dedicatation to spreading the beauty of Sikhi to Sikh youth throughout the world. For 50 + years he has dedicated his life to inspiring all and spreading the love of the Guru through camps and Divans such as Darbar-e-Khalsa. He truly deserves this award.

111: Editor, sikhchic.com (Canada), December 26, 2008, 9:33 PM.

Thank you all for your ardent and zealous participation in this project. As scheduled, the nominations are now closed, as of 9.00 pm (Toronto time) today. The "winner" will be announced on sikhchic.com on Thursday, January 1, 2009.

112: Ravinder Kaur Singh (Tampa, Florida), January 06, 2009, 1:48 AM.

I nominate Dr. Manmohan Singh. He has dedicated his life to the betterment of his people. Yes! First, it was Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and now it is Dr. Mahmohan Singh.

113: Puneet Kaur (Tampa, Forida, U.S.A.), January 06, 2009, 1:53 AM.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. We salute him. He ROCKS!

114: Poonam Kaur (Tampa, Florida, U.S.A.), January 06, 2009, 1:54 AM.

Dr. Manmohan Singh. He simply rocks India!

115: Karnail Singh Kalsi (Ludhiana, Punjab, India), February 13, 2009, 7:57 AM.

I vote for Prof. Surinder Singh who has helped promote Sikh music in the diaspora, and had it included in academia.
