The Nightingale & The Rose

A Poem by INNI KAUR

From a distance,
he watches her -
Afraid to reveal,
Afraid to touch.

But one night,
pangs of love
invade his being.
He abandons his haven
to be with her.

Tenderly, he approaches her,
Her radiance intoxicates him.

She’s nervous,
He’s gentle.
She trembles,
He embraces.

Song flows,
He unveils
The birth of his love,
The passion of his soul.

She’s overwhelmed
and rests
on his chest.

She shimmers -
Pale as the morning mist,
Silver as the wings of dawn.

Song follows song:
You are my light,
You are my consciousness,
You are the reason for my being,
Without you, I am nothing.

She snuggles closer,
His hold tightens.

Then…
A thorn
pricks his heart -
Pain engulfs him.

His song deepens

It is
The song of Love
perfected by death.

It is
The song of Love
that transcends death.

She blushes
like a maiden
waiting
to be kissed.

The thorn travels
deeper and deeper.

His life-blood ebbs,
His voice muffles,
His eyes haze -
Yet
He releases
his last song.

She hears his passion,
She trembles in ecstasy,
She opens herself,
and receives him.

Drenched in crimson,
she glows
like the bride
of the eastern sky.

Creation resounds -
The Rose
is no longer white.

Realization dawns,
She is transformed.

Drenched in his love,
Her journey has just begun,
Love bursts,
Trellises crumble,
She is his,
He is hers.

But
Where is he?

Silence descends

At her feet
he lies dead
with a thorn
through his heart.

Moon shivers,
forgets dawn
and lingers.

Zephyr stands
in awe.

Flora bows
in reverence.

She speaks:
My love,
I will carry our love -
Our love will transcend
Time and Space.
Our love
is eternal.

The Moon whispers:
You are
the symbol
of True Love.

Pangs of love; they make you bleed; they suck the life out of you; leave you with tears and a hole in the heart. Why is True Love so painful?

This reminds me of the Mohammed Rafi song, "ik gulab te ik he bubul ..."
