The Province of Ontario in Canada annually celebrates the month of April as Sikh Heritage Month.

Partaal Gayaki attey Raag Badh Gurbani Kirtan /
Multi-Rythmic Renditions in Established Gurbani Musical Measures

Presented by Professor Paramjeet Singh and his students

Partaal is a unique musical genre created by Guru Ramdas, the Fourth Master, in which the use of Raag (musical measure) and Taal (rhythm) is featured. Multiple taals are used in one composition and transition from one taal to another is mathematically complex and beautiful.

The History and Future of The Punjabi Language

Sunday, April 5, 1 to 2:30 pm

Hosted by Steven Gucciardi

This lecture will discuss the linguistic history of the Punjabi language and the political events which continue to shape its position on the South Asian subcontinent and around the world.

Questions to be answered include: What is the relationship of Punjabi to Sanskrit? Why have different communities historically expressed different levels of commitment to the language? Can Punjabi be preserved as the community spreads all over the world? Attendees will also be introduced to the newly-formed Peel Punjabi Conversation Club.

The Power of One
Discussion and art activity

This is an arts-inspired workshop that discusses race and religion in the context of bullying. Though an arts-based activity youth learn about the negative impacts of discrimination, while also gaining skills to address bullying and challenge stereotypes in their community. For ages 14 to 24.

The Lost Palace of Amritsar

A majestic palace unlike any other once glimmered in reflection in the waters of the sacred pool of nectar at Amritsar in the Golden Temple complex. Learn about the discovery of what was once one of the most magnificent examples of Sikh architecture located within the extensive precincts of the Darbar Sahib. Based on his ground-breaking research and discovery of the palace, SikhMuseum.com Curator Sandeep Singh Brar will take us on a journey as we follow the history of the lost palace and the space it occupied from its origins in the Sikh Empire, to British Rule and eventually modern times.

Artist August Schoefft's historical masterpiece painting of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the Golden Temple is one of the most important paintings of the Sikh Empire. This presentation by SikhMuseum.com takes a closer look at this 174-year-old masterpiece revealing many surprises and amazing stories.

Punjab: A Photo Exhibition by Rick Singh Matharu

Presented by The Glass Museum

Twenty years after his first visit, Rick Singh Matharu returned to Punjab. Through the lens of his camera, Rick captured street photography from the back of an auto-rickshaw, by wandering the little streets of old Amritsar, and stumbling across different flavours and visions of the land of five rivers, the birthplace of Sikhism.

Yoga Exercises (Children's Class)

Yoga exercises help create bright spirits, supple minds and healthy bodies.  This easy class is adapted for children of all ages.  Their parents can join in too.  Taught by Guru Fatha Singh Khalsa.

Attendees are required to bring their own yoga mat. If interested participants do not have access to a yoga mat, a long towel or sheet will do as a suitable alternative.
