INNI KAUR

Today’s Hukam, Darbar Sahib, Amritsar – Sunday, September 1, 2013

O dear friend, know this in your mind: The world is entangled in its own pleasures; no one is for anyone else. || 1 ||  Pause  ||

In good times, many come and sit together, surrounding you on all four sides. But when hard times come, they all leave, and no one comes near you.  || 1 ||

Your spouse, whom you love so much, and who has remained ever attached to you, runs away crying, “Ghost! Ghost!”, as soon as the swan-soul leaves this body.  || 2 ||

This is the way they act -- even those we love so much. At the very last moment, O Nanak, no one is any use at all, except the Divine.  || 3 || 12 || 139 ||

Today’s Hukam begins with a deep understanding – know that the Divine resides within you.

Listen, my child, the entire world is entangled. Everyone is motivated by their own self-interest. No one truly belongs to anyone. Reflect on this.

In times of happiness, many surround you. In times of hardship no one comes near you. Your life-partner whom you adore, will immediately dispose you as soon as your life-breath leaves. Know that this is the way the world. You have attached your love to the mortals and forgotten the Creator. Remember, in the end none of these mortals will be of any use to you.

Connect with Naam.

Naam is the boat that will help you cross this world-ocean. You may have all the things but if you don’t have a boat how are you going to get across. Whatever you have gathered stays behind. When you breathe your last no one is of any use to you except the Divine.

A powerful reflection …

Inni ji: what a delight to read your rendering of the hukams that capture the spirit most closely than the archaic and flowery translations elsewhere. Thank you ever so much.
