Sikh-Punjabi First Woman to Win Crorepati/Millionaire TV Quiz Show
NEWS REPORT
Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney, a Sikh woman from Punjab, has emerged as the winner of Rs.5 crore (50 Million Rupees- roughly equivalent $ 1 million) on Indian TV game show, 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' ("KBC") -- the country's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire".
She is the show's first female winner of the million-dollar jackpot ever.
Sunmeet Kaur, a home tutor and now a resident of Mumbai, couldn't believe she had cracked the jackpot, until the show's host, megastar Amitabh Bachchan hugged her.
"I couldn't believe that I won! Mr. Bachchan had to come and hug me for me to believe that I have won Rs.5 crore. My husband also had to come and tell me so," she said.
The episode featuring her victory will be aired next week.
Her plan is to donate a part of the money to charity. "We will decide what to do with the rest of it later," added the 37-year-old.
She hails from Chandigarh, Punjab but has been living in Mumbai since a few years now. Married to a small-time actor who has done some side roles in films, they have two daughters.
"We have rented a place in Mumbai and have been staying here since a few years," she said.
Addressing the press, host Amitabh Bachchan added, "Sunmeet is the first woman to win Rs 5 Crore on the show. Being a housewife, she is well aware of things and is well educated and played very well."
