Jaspreet Kaur: Chandigarh's Queen of Conversation

by JAGMEETA THIND JOY

She's the quintessential Chandigarh di kurri, with a disarming smile and a gregarious personality. It’s hardly a surprise then, that Jaspreet Kaur, popularly known as Jassi, is now a part of almost every social and entertainment do in the city - be it fashion shows, star nights or corporate promotions.

It all started more than half a decade ago when she stepped on stage as a nervous emcee for a cultural show, dressed in a short kurti paired with a flowing Patiala salwar. Today, the petite anchor is often seen in designer gowns, sharing stage with Bollywood celebrities not only in Chandigarh but also at faraway places - Srinagar or Bakersfield, U.S.A. or even Toronto, Canada.

“Anchoring has always been my forte. It's like a natural extension of my personality and I don’t have to try too hard,” says the 25-year-old. She’s just back in Chandigarh from Amritsar, where she co-hosted the launch of a jewellery show along with actor Rakshanda Khan.

oking remarkably fresh even after the long night’s drive, she says: “I love to travel.”

But finding a comfortable spot on the stage hasn’t stopped Jaspreet Kaur from constantly reinventing herself. Venturing into modelling, she bagged some print campaigns in the region.

Her onstage career goes hand in hand with her onscreen avatar, as she continues to host music shows and celebrity interviews for channels such as ETC Punjabi, Zee Punjabi and MH1.

Her latest show Udaari, where she interviews women from different walks of life, is getting Jaspreet Kaur rave reviews.

Udaari is a show I had been wanting to do for a long time. In one of the episodes recently, I interviewed the first woman who drives a train engine in north India and her story turned to be so inspirational for me as well,” shares Jaspreet.

Closely involved in deciding the show’s content as well, she says she is hoping to share many more such stories of ordinary women who have overcome difficulties to emerge as winners in their own right.

Usually associated with soft programming, she believes dealing with “real” issues of society is part of her learning curve. “Since I am a post graduate in law, such issues interest me. This also helps me show a lesser-known serious side of my personality,” she adds, explaininng that she is scouting for more such stories for the show.

Jaspreet was offered roles in Punjabi films in the past but it’s only now that she’s become open to the idea.

“Acting is similar to anchoring and though I have been associated with the theatre, I was looking for a role that’s not usual,” she says.

But before that, she’s hoping to bag a travel show to be telecast overseas. “A travel show is something I haven’t done so far and I hope to fulfill my desire to travel the world,” she says.

But that’s not all. Multi-tasking surely comes easy to her, as she also helps her sister in her venture as a wedding planner.

“I know how to manage my time well. It’s all about discipline,” she says.
