Buried At Sea:
Ruby Dhalla, Ujjal Dosanjh

by CHARANPAL SINGH

Last night's federal election in Canada was a nail-biter for many reasons.

For Sikh-Canadians, it was a crucial one too!

Having been badly let down by some of the representatives they had elected, it was time to weed out the dead weight, and bring in some new blood.

And that's exactly what Canada's half-a-million strong Sikh-Canadian community did ... it sent out a clear message to its 'leaders' that it expected competency, integrity, courage and honesty from its elected leaders, in return for status, glory, a generous pay-cheque and a fat pension-package at the end of the road.

That is, being a member of parliament in Canada was not meant to be a free ride!

Therefore, in quick and firm strokes, the fruitless and meaningless political careers of Ruby Dhalla and Ujjal Dosanjh - you have already read about their anti-Sikh, anti-Canadian shenanigans in these very pages! - were brought to an end and, to borrow a phrase from one of sikhchic.com's readers, they were promptly buried at sea.

Other dead-weight was also identified and shown the door, including Navdeep Singh Bains and Sukh Singh Dhaliwal.

Sadly, of the dozens we have sent to Ottawa and Parliament over the years, not many have had the decency to earn their keep.

There's some new blood now amongst those who were brought to power last night, and there's some of yesteryear's crop who have been allowed to stay afloat for another term. Hope they've got the message loud and clear that they are in Canada, not in India, and they need to work for their living: honestly, diligently, meticulously ... by meeting the highest of standards in this wonderful land.

There are, at last count, six Sikh-Canadians in the new parliament, which now has a comfortable majority - Conservatives - for the first time in years. Four of them belong to the governing party. They are:

Bal Singh Gosal, Conservative, Bramalea-Gore-Malton, Ontario
Parm Singh Gill, Conservative, Brampton-Springdale, Ontario
Tim Singh Uppal, Conservative, Edmonton-Sherwood Park, Alberta
Nina Kaur Grewal, Conservative, Fleetwood-Port Kells, British Columbia
Jasbir Singh Sandhu, New Democratic Party (NDP), Surrey North, British Columbia
Jinny Kaur Sims, NDP, Newton-North Delta, British Columbia

We wish them the very best of luck ... and chardi kala!

Weren't we doing the same "balle balle" with the last crop ... The Who said it best: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

It makes me proud to see Tim Singh Uppal with his turban and flowing beard become a member of parliament of one of the most sought-after countries by immigrants from all over the world. Bravo, Sikh-Canadians ... some day your neighbor-citizens will also elect a Sikh candidate in their senate or congress.

You gotta love it! When the likes of Gurbax Singh Malhi and Navdeep Singh Bains were elected, we couldn't be more proud. Turban-wearing Sikhs in Canada's Parliament! We are thankful to them for opening the doors for future generations.

Chintan ji: you should come to Canada and see Mr. Uppal's doings. A few bankrupties, no credible job record, are but a few of his qualities. We are in the habit of supporting losers.

Herb ... Ruby ... Tim ... Nina ... Jinny ...? Are you sure these are 'Sikh' politicians? Sounds more like the lineup of speakers at the annual christian felllowship convention.

I'm delighted to see the change in our political landscape.
