Sikh Philatelist Wows World Postage Stamp Meet

by RUPINDER KAUR

Seventy-nine countries are participating in the World Philatelic Exhibition, currently being held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India until tomorrow, February 18, 2011.

S. Paramjeet Singh from Patna, Bihar, India, bagged the ‘Large Silver Medal' for his thematic collection on ‘Sikhs and Sikhism'.

This is the third time that he has achieved an award in an international forum, the first two being Bronze in 1997 (Delhi) and 2000 (Calcutta).

He has displayed his collection of eighty sheets in five frames. The exhibit is truly remarkable as it covers every element of postal paraphernalia, like stamps, first day covers, postcards, postmarks, meter marks, aero-grams, inland letters, maximum cards and special covers.

His masterpiece collection is of the greeting aero-grams from the pre-independence period depicting Sikh soldiers.

A philatelist at heart, he started collecting stamps from childhood and has participated in various exhibitions, starting from 1982. He is a life member of the Philatelic Congress of India, the Bihar Philatelic Society and the Ludhiana Philatelic Club.

The Indipex-2011 was an opportunity for Sikh stamp collectors from various parts of the country to organize a Sikh Philatelic Meet and share their views on the past, present and the future prospects of Sikh stamps.

An idea was also raised to form a Sikh Philatelic Club in Delhi shortly.

Cool. It would be great to get some of the collection digitized, so that people like me can get an opportunity to see it online.

Paramjit ji, heartiest Congrats. Sorry, I could not make it to the Sikh Meet. Please keep me posted on what transpired. We are proud of your achievement.

Paramjit Singh ji is a very avid collector. I have known him for over five years. He's a regular at state level and national exhibitions. He takes a lot of pain and effort in building his collection. It was his initiative to get a common platform for fellow collectors with the themes of Sikhism and Punjab. The first meeting took place at Delhi on February 16, 2011.

5: H.P. Singh (Amritsar, Punjab), February 26, 2011, 5:06 AM.

I congratulate S. Paramjit Singh for his achievement on the international level and arranging a Sikh collectors' meet. I also want to congratulate the author of this article who has taken a lot of pain in gathering the information. Please keep it up. My best wishes are with both of you.
