17-yr-old Sikh-American Supreet Kaur: Do Something!
by RITA DELFINER
Supreet Kaur hopes to become an environmental-protection lawyer who influences policy - and the Queens (New York, U.S.A.) teen is already practicing the leadership skills she'll need to "try to make changes happen."
The 17-year-old senior at Manhattan's High School for Environmental Studies is a member of the youth advisory council of Do Something, a nonprofit that helps young people "take action in their community to make a difference," said Amanda Ashton, a spokeswoman for the organization.
Last year, Supreet Kaur took part in Do Something`s ``Teens for Jeans`` drive, in which kids nationwide collected jeans to donate to homeless teens.
She gives the organization feedback on its teen programs, and helps organize projects.
"When you're around people who are passionate about what they do, it doesn't seem like community service. It just makes you want to work that much harder and go the extra mile," Supreet said.
She plans to start a knitting club at school this year "to make things for kids or senior citizens in a hospital and visit them and give it to them directly."
Ashton nominated Supreet for a Post Liberty Medal in the Young Heart category. "She really stands out in her enthusiasm and her dedication to inspiring those around her to take action," Ashton said.
