The Month of Assu
[September 15 - October 14]

Poems translated from Punjabi by GURMEET KAUR

1  Guru Nanak  [Raag Tukhaari, GGS:1108]

In the month of Assu - ardent

Come

O Beloved!

The soul bride

Sorrows

Waning

Pleading ...

Lost in duality

Strayed

Alone

Only you can

Lead

Her home

Entrapped in Maya

False trade

Forsaken by thee

Locks gray

So swiftly

It slipped away

Warmth of summer

Passes her by

Cold and feeble

Days await

Mind shudders -

Deceptive play

O look! - green abounds

Guru graces - Hope surrounds!

Slowly and sweetly

She ripens

Unwavering, resolutely

Grace strengthens

Says Nanak:

My Guru

Has held me close

Become my upholder -

And lead me home

So, meet my beloved

Listen to thy servant

In the month of Assu - ardent.

2  Guru Arjan, [Raag Maajh, GGS:135]

In the month of Assu - ardent

Love

Of the Divine

Engulfs

How do I meet

Thee ?

Thirsty

Body and mind

O my Mother

Someone

Lead me

Witness

Of thy love

Thy saints

My succor

Their feet I seek

Serenity

Exists not

Elsewhere

No place to go

Besides Him

Fulfillment

Relishing

Celestial nectar of His love

Pleasures of the flesh

Do not appease me

Renouncing

The self

Attached

To His robe

She pleads thee

Clinging

Ever

To the Naam

She does not

Leave Him

Prays Nanak

For the sanctuary

None other

Can

Provide

Those

Whom he graces

Blossom

Forever in content

In the month of Assu - ardent

I just read "The Month of Assu" while going through the eye of a hurricane, but the words of Gurbani, mingled with Gurmeet's brought me wonder and relief. Thank you so much for your incredible sensibility.

Beautiful translation and unparalleled description of love and nature. Until I started to read Gurmeet's rendering in English, I had not appreciated the co-relationship between the yearning for love and the support of the Divine. Separation, of course is soul-searing. Thanks.

Thank you for bringing and reminding us of the great treasure our Guru Sahiban have left for us. Thank you for your kind seva.
