The Month of Bhaado(n)
[August 16 - September 14]

Poems translated from Punjabi by GURMEET KAUR

1  Guru Nanak [Raag Tukhaari, GGS:1108

In the month of Bhaadon - enigmatic

Lost in

Duality

Youth full of

Pleasures

Life full of

Regrets

Lands and seas

Rejoice in

Abundance

Agony

Bears down

Celebrations

Dreadful

Dark nights

Pour of

Restlessness

Frogs and peacocks bellow

Confusion maddens

Slithers of snakes

Stings of insects

Strife of separation

Deluges

Rainbird cries ‘O Beloved

Show me the way!'

Says Nanak:

I shall ask

My Guru

As he commands

So shall I

Accord

In the month of Bhaadon - enigmatic.

2  Guru Arjan  [Raag Maajh, GGS:134]

In the month of Bhaadon - enigmatic.

Delusion:

Lost in

Love of the other

Countless embellishments

Help not!

Entrapped:

In the dusk of life

End unknowingly strikes

Life illusion

Ceases

Abandoned:

By the very own

In whom she sought solace

As the body shrivels

To depart the worldly plane

Writhe:

In remorse

Helpless and pale

As sowed, so she harvests

Such is the karma's game

Prays Nanak:

Give her the sanctuary

Grasp of thy feet

To cross the world's ocean

Surpass the hells of guile

In the month of Bhaadon - enigmatic.

Thank you, as always, for bringing the spirit of gurbani to those of us whose Punjabi is ... well ... halting at best. Much love to you for spreading the One Light.

The refrain in the whole of 'Baarah Maah', be it the hottest or the coldest month, is never to forgot Waheguru. This was synonymous to man's journey itself. Didn't Guru Arjan himself demonstrated in his own life when he sat on the hot plate and burning sand poured on him ... he remained in perfect equipoise. The month of Bhaado(n) itself, like human nature, blows hot and cold, and cannot make up its mind, but the anchor remains in His 'Bhaana'. Thank you, Gurmeet, for another exquisite rendering.
