Three Poems

by EKAM KAUR BAJWA

1

EPIPHANY

The sound of you is sweeter than any edible treat I've known,

Not sickeningly so, like cotton candy,

Bittersweet perhaps,

Relief and elation.

Ache and the daunting awareness

Of feeling lost. Of loss.

But the knowledge of maybe having something

That I could lose,

Comes to me with such pleasant epiphany.

I could feel miserable.

You are subtle.

But sublime in your smile,

Your eyes,

Your laughter,

Your casual awe.

I'd love to listen to you laugh again.

If only I could hear the sound of your smile.

NIGHTMARES

Isn't it kind of weird

That sometimes you even wish

All your nightmares were real

Just so you could feel alive again?

Isn't it kind of fun

To smile as your world

Slowly falls apart?

3

BUTTERFLY

You blossomed beautifully like a flower

When you smiled, you could take on the world

At first, I assumed you were just perfect

You were like a little butterfly

It was like you could close your eyes and fly

Others shriveled up in awe

But is that what you really wanted?

I swear, I saw when you began to crumble

Was perfection just too incredible?

Even for you?

You remained 'Ekam' in those lovely poems. We are proud of our brilliant children who keep reassuring us that they have plenty of room to blossom in such a benign atmosphere. That is how education should be, but it starts at home.

Ekam, your poems bring out the bitter-sweet nature of life. Lovely poems. It is great to see a budding poet-writer! It will be great to keep reading you as you develop. Keep it up!

Ekam: these poems are very thoughtful! They are touching, real, have the harsh realty of life and yet are more beautiful than butterflies.
