More than 450 kg of atta flour and 400 kg of rice were cooked to serve 1,300 Sikhs who attended a seven-day youth camp held here this year.

In addition, vegetables, lentils and dessert were also prepared for the participants and volunteers who were served six meals a day. The camp, which began on Sunday, December 18, 2011, and ended yesterday - Saturday, December 24 - is an annual event.

The camp, called Samelan 2011, has been organised by the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (Malaysian Sikh Youth Organisation), or SNSM, since 1963.

Samelan 2011 organising chairman Mohan Singh said of the 1,300 Sikhs at this year's event, 913 were children and 410 volunteers.

Most of the participants were from Selangor, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan. There were also participants from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and even China.

This year, the organisation empowered the youth to create and implement all the learning and activity modules.

The organisers estimate the food bill to be between RM50,000 and RM60,000 while the total cost of organising the event was about RM180,000.
