Gurvinder Singh’s Punjabi Film On 1984 Bags Top Honours At Singapore and Belgrade FilmFests

NEWS REPORT

Punjabi movie “Chauthi Koot (The Fourth Direction)” has been honoured yet again in international forums -- this time with the Best Film Award at two prestigious international film festivals.

The 26th Singapore International Film Festival has named it Best Film.

As has the Auteur Film Festival in Belgrade ... as Best Film.

Directed by Gurvinder Singh, the 115-minute drama highlights the 1980s in Punjab and the resistance movement -- fostered by large-scale human rights violations by the Indian Government in and following 1984 -- unfolding through the stories of two friends embarked on a train journey to Amritsar.

The film is based on two Punjabi short stories by Waryam Singh Sandhu on the Sikh resistance movement of the 1980s and 90s.

The director’s first film in 2011, “Anhey Ghorrhey Da Daan (Alms for a Blind Horse)”, had also met widespread international recognition.

Good to know that there is such a movie. I have heard of it. But now the hard part begins. We know such a movie will never compete with the mainstream commercial cinema; so how does one get to watch a film like this one?

I had to watch his last film in the end on Youtube. it only had 70,000 views but that is better than nothing. No point competing with mass media films, they are for the masses who I fear are never wise and just want light entertainment. When is this film out?
