American Children Tackle The Turban In School Art

VISHAVJIT SINGH

Turbans have been part of the American experience since the beginning of the 20th century, but today more than ever for many Americans they elicit a negative visceral response.

Much of this is the result of stereotypical images perpetuated through ignorance and negligence by the media and popular culture.

To counter this narrative, I have been on the road for the last few years hopping from schools to universities across the nation.

As part of these programs, I share my story via cartoons, screen a short 10 minute film, ‘Red, White and Beard’ about my adventures as a turbaned, bearded Captain America battling ignorance and intolerance on the streets of America.

Then I work with young school children on an interactive cartoon workshop with only one rule: create some fresh character or scene that has never been done before. Make it your own.

Some of the children seeing me in person in my blue turban and beard, and  animated by the short film, make the choice to import the turban into their own imagination.

The images shown here are but a sampling of what was created by middle school students in San Francisco as their first Turban Art ever.

Enjoy the American Turban!
